Is This Why You Are Still Suffering With Chronic Pain?

Why Is Treatment Not Working?

I’ve put this blog post together after several conversations with people about the deeper causes of chronic pain. It’s something I see often, and yet very few people realise how important it is, so I felt compelled to write this article.

This can be particularly relevant if you’ve already tried all the usual approaches. Maybe you’ve seen a chiropractor, had physio, osteopathy, massage, or myofascial release (or all of them and more). You may have been stretching, following the recommended strengthening exercises, Pilates, yoga, breathwork, supplements, dietary changes. You might feel like you’ve covered every angle, and yet your pain remains.

This can be really disheartening, especially if no one has ever mentioned there could be another layer involved.

The Body Remembers Trauma

If you’ve had an accident, an injury, or a time in your life that felt too much to cope with, your body may still be holding onto it – even years later.

You may not think of that moment as trauma. Maybe it was “just” an operation, a car crash, a bad fall, a difficult birth, or a long period of stress. But if your nervous system didn’t fully process what happened, your body may still be carrying the imprint of it. That can show up in your muscles, joints, fascia, posture – and in your pain.

When something feels threatening, whether it’s physical or emotional, your nervous system activates what’s known as the perceived threat response. Your body prepares for survival. Muscles tighten, breathing changes, movement becomes restricted. Your system closes in around the site of impact or stress to keep you safe.

This is the header for a blog describing how stress and other trapped emotions can be the cause to chronic pain remaining. This image is of a beautiful tranquil blue sea with nothing to see but the water stretching out until you reach a hilly coastline or island in the distance. The sky is blue and in the fore ground in the sand you can see two foot prints and the word stress which someone has drawn in the sand. The sea is about to wash over it and erase the stress. This is a pictoral illustration of how stress can be removed and pain can resolve.

If the experience was too overwhelming at the time, your system may not have registered that the danger has passed. It gets stuck in that state, even if the original threat is long gone. This isn’t about conscious memory – it’s a physiological state your body is holding onto.

This is one of the main reasons pain hangs around. The physical injury may have healed, but your nervous system still feels under threat. It’s stuck in response mode, still sending pain signals, still holding tension.

That’s why it can feel like nothing works. Why no amount of stretching or strengthening, taking medications or supplements seems to bring lasting change. Until the perceived threat is resolved and your system feels safe again, your body won’t fully let go.

Understanding the Perceived Threat

The reason pain can persist, even when the original injury has healed, is often down to the fact that your system still believes there’s a threat. Not in a conscious, logical way – but in the way your nervous system responds when something felt like too much to deal with at the time.

When your body goes into survival mode, it gears up to protect you. That’s normal. What’s supposed to happen next is that the system completes the cycle – it discharges the stress, recognises the danger is over, and settles. But if the emotional impact of what happened wasn’t able to move through, that cycle doesn’t complete. Instead, the energy gets stuck. The nervous system stays braced, and the body holds on.

That’s the perceived threat response.

How Is This Relevant To Chronic Pain?

This is where pain often becomes more than just a symptom of an old injury. It becomes a signal that something in your system still feels unsafe. That there’s something unresolved. And your body, in its own way, is trying to help you avoid what it thinks might overwhelm you if you fully felt it.

What your system doesn’t realise is that with the right support, you can feel it – safely, gently, and without needing to relive or explain every detail. It’s not about talking it through or mentally processing it. It’s about helping your body recognise that the threat has passed.

The processes I use, Root Cause Therapy and PSYCH-K®, are designed for exactly this. They help us identify what your system is holding, even if you don’t consciously know what it is. And they support the release of that emotional imprint so your nervous system can finally reset.

Once that perceived threat is no longer running in the background, your body stops guarding, and starts healing.

The background is blurred out you can tell it is a cityscape you can make out a block of flats to the right and tress to the left. In focus in the middle is a set of traffic lights. The lights are on green with the round light and off to the right a green arrow lit up to show you can turn to the right. This is to give a visual representation of when the threat response is switched off your body is good to go again and move in the right direction.

Here Are A Few Examples

  • A whiplash injury that didn’t fully resolve until we addressed the shock of the impact and the anger at the driver who wasn’t paying attention.
  • Post-operative pain that lingered because of the fear and loss of control during surgery, and the emotional process of coming to terms with decisions made by the surgeon which were out of their control.
  • Persistent discomfort from a fracture that had physically healed, but where fear and helplessness were still being held in that area of the body.
  • Shoulder pain that remained long after a client had carried their injured dog for miles. Their arms were still “holding on” even though they made it to the vets and their dog was fine and healthy now. There nervous system just hadn’t caught up with that.

Sometimes it’s not even about the injury itself. It might be a period of extreme stress.  I regularly see this in clinical practise such as, money worries, a breakup/divorce, the threat of redundancy, all life stresses that are significant to you. Your body might attach that emotion to a physical place in you, and keep expressing it there.

So if your pain has outlasted what your scans and tests suggest it should have done, if you’ve been told “it should have healed by now,” and it hasn’t – there may be more going on than just the physical.

And once that deeper layer is addressed, real change can happen.

If you’ve been living with pain that just won’t lift, and you feel like you’ve tried everything, I hope you now have a new perspective – one that helps you see there may be something else worth investigating.

Not all hands-on therapists are trained in this area, so it may not have been discussed with you, which means this crucial element may have been missed in your treatments so far.

But it doesn’t have to stay that way.

With the right support, your body can start to release what it’s been holding onto in a way that’s gentle and effective. You won’t need to talk through everything over and over. You don’t even need to know right now what the specific issue is.

Root Cause Therapy, PSYCH-K®, Systematic Kinesiology help us identify the best way to support your body and mind to move forwards.

Once that emotional memory is released, your system can finally feel safe again, from there, your body can return to doing what it’s always been designed to do, recover, reset and heal.
